Father / Coach

My 12 year old son finished running the mile in 5:56. Compared to other boys in his age group where does he rank.

He does not train to run the mile but he is a very active boy and does play baseball, football and basketball.

Hello Martin,

This is a very good mile time at the age of 12. I recall that I didn't break 6 minutes until I was 14, and that was during the track season after I had been training for a few months. If he isn't into running just quite yet, don't push him to run all the time, but you should let him know that he has some good talent there.

Compared to boys his age, I would say he is in the top 5% or even higher. This is an impressive time! Looks like you have a runner on your hands. Hopefully when he gets into high school, you could encourage him to run cross country or track. I think he would be successful in both.
