I run xc and track in high school. the training is very high mileage and it's really tough. many of my teammates have gotten injured, most of the injuries have been stress fractures. Now that track is officially started, I do not want to become injured during the upcoming season. Are there any exercises you recommend to prevent injuries in the shins and hips?
Stress fractures are serious business. The best way to prevent them is to come into the season with some miles under your belt, so your body is accustomed to higher mileage. Another thing that is very important is your running form. If you are a heel striker, you increase the risk of stress fractures and shin splints.
This is an older video that I did on running form, but pay attention to how you should land with your feet. Increase your stride rate, try to get your foot under your center of gravity so you avoid heel striking. Watch how the Olympic Distance runners run. They all have smooth strides where they land right under their body.
No exercises will really help you "prevent" a stress fracture. It's all about form.
