Masters Running - The best tips for runners over the age of 40.

Masters running means people who are actively running and over the age of 40. Running is a lifestyle sport, so there is no age limit to when you can start, and for that matter when you have to stop.

A tremendous resourse for you is the website The Master Runner. The creator of the site Duncan Sisk explains why masters running is so important. "This website is the link to the tools we need for mastery in our lives - especially as relates to becoming - or staying - fit and active, and enjoying our busy lives."

A master runner needs to focus on two things when running.

First, you need to work your way into fitness slowly. Your body as it ages can handle the stress if you are already in shape, but if you aren't, take your time and work your way up.

The second thing is you need to focus on good running form. There are many approaches to running, but I believe in ChiRunning form. It has kept me injury free since I began following it's principals, and that is saying a lot considering my history of knee injuries.

Staying fit and being active as you grow older helps you feel younger. If you don't use it, you'll lose it. Running is only one piece of the puzzle when it comes to staying active. As a master runner I also encourage cross training. There are a lot of different activities you can do, but keep them low impact. Swimming, biking, cross country skiing if you get snow in the winter are all great supplements to running. The key is to find something you enjoy doing. If you don't enjoy it, chances are, you won't stick with it.

I'm not quite a master runner yet, but I sure plan on running well past my 40's. My father is in his 60's and still is running. I hope to follow in his footsteps and continue with my healthy lifestyle.
